The oil sump is mostly stamped out of thin steel plate, and the internal oil stabilizing baffle is installed to avoid the shock and splash on the right side caused by the bumping of the diesel engine, which is conducive to the precipitation of lubricating oil impurities. Most of the cars seen on the market are wet oil sumps. The reason for the name of the wet oil sump is that the crankshaft of the engine and the big head of the connecting rod will be immersed in the oil of the oil sump once every revolution of the crankshaft It plays a lubricating role. At the same time, due to the high-speed operation of the crankshaft, every time the crank is immersed in the oil sump at high speed, it will arouse a certain amount of oil and oil mist. Lubricating the crankshaft and bearing bush is called splash lubrication. In this way, there is a certain requirement for the height of the liquid level of the lubricating oil in the cast aluminum transmission pan. If it is too low, the crankshaft crank and the large end of the connecting rod cannot be immersed in the lubricating oil, resulting in a lack of lubrication and smooth crankshaft, connecting rod and bearing pad If the lubricating oil level is too high, it will cause the entire bearing to immerse, which will increase the rotational resistance of the crankshaft, which will eventually cause the engine performance to decrease. At the same time, the lubricating oil will easily enter the cylinder combustion chamber, causing problems such as engine burning oil and spark plug carbon deposits. This lubrication method has a simple structure and does not require an additional oil tank, but the inclination of the vehicle's work must not be too large, otherwise it will cause a burn-out cylinder accident due to oil cutoff or oil leakage.

The place where the lubricant is stored is the oil sump. The ordinary engine oil sump is located on the engine‘s At the bottom, it is a large basin-like container with a hole underneath. It is usually sealed with an oil drain bolt. The entire volume of the cast aluminum transmission pan is about 3L. The part in the white frame above is the ordinary wet cast aluminum transmission pan.
The main function of the oil sump is to store engine oil and close the crankcase. It is generally stamped from thin steel plates. Its shape depends on the overall layout of the engine and the capacity of the engine oil. In order to allow the oil in the cast aluminum transmission pan to dissipate better, some engines use an aluminum alloy casting cast aluminum transmission pan, and the bottom is also cast with corresponding fins. In order to ensure that the oil pump can normally absorb oil when the engine is tilted longitudinally, the rear of the cast aluminum transmission pan is generally deeper. However, there is a relatively big problem with wet cast aluminum transmission pans. When the vehicle is under extreme driving conditions, such as high-speed cornering or extreme off-road, the lubricating oil in the engine accumulates in the engine cast aluminum transmission pan due to centrifugal force or gravity. A local part, causing part of the crank to not be immersed in the oil, poor lubrication and engine damage.
Faced with such a serious problem, some designers have found a solution, that is, to simply eliminate the installation of a container at the bottom of the engine, but to install an oil tank externally, and use an oil pump to pressure lubricate the crankshaft and connecting rod system. The so-called dry sump. In fact, this technology is also used in wet cast aluminum transmission pans. This pressure lubrication is used for camshaft lubrication in the valve train. Although the dry oil sump solves the problem of oil sloshing, there is another problem at the same time, that is, additional power is required to drive the oil pump. Although the wet oil sump also requires an oil pump, the power is quite different compared to Large, the power to drive the oil pump comes from the engine. For large-displacement high-performance engines, this power loss is not a big deal, but for engines with a displacement of less than 2.0L, its proportion cannot be ignored. Too. In addition, because the oil storage tank of the dry sump is independent and not located at the bottom of the engine, this reduces the center of gravity of the engine, thereby improving the overall handling of the vehicle to a certain extent.
Because the dry oil sump requires additional components, and the lubricating oil circuit is high-pressure, its manufacturing and use costs are much higher than that of the wet oil sump, and the structure is more complicated, but the reliability will be corresponding. The cost of maintenance will increase if problems occur.
In short, both the wet sump and dry sump designs have their shortcomings, as the contradictory parties always exist.
